laurie jones, after the crash

after the crash is where it all began. laurie's strikingly confessional lyrics and hard-rocking pop melodies caught the attention of everyone who heard them on her reversing recordings debut. released in 2000, the record features the same core band as on "better days," along with a host of guest musicians and friends (including paul sullivan, fredi monteaux, miriam brody, ian parker and ron parent). together they joyously serve up a non-stop musical adventure touching on ska, 60s brit-pop, folk-rock and scream-out-loud rock.

as jones put it in the "crash" press release: "writing songs is like pulling weeds. it's great therapy, automatic, natural and relatively quick. before you know it, you have this huge pile. sometimes in that pile of weeds you're lucky enough to find some dirty flowers. after the crash is 14 of those dirty flowers for your listening pleasure." press
reviews and interviews:

  • portland phoenix by pete hodgin
"...offers plenty of catchy, mid-tempo melodies and even a couple low-burn rockers." 05/01

  • portland press herald
"writing songs is like therapy for me. i feel too much. my album would not exist if all these things had not happened to me. you grow and learn. i'm a better songwriter for it." 04/01

  • goldmine magazine by lee zimmerman
"jones' arrangements also betray the mark of an accomplished artist. given some well-deserved exposure, jones has the makings of a major star." 02/01

  • indie-music.com by les reynolds
"lyrically and instrumentally, this CD really clicks. the emphasis on drums and harmonica, along with good lyrics, make this somewhat different than most of what's "out there" these days -- somewhat better, actually." 02/01

  • ellsworth american
"the drums were obnoxious on purpose - the guitar raw on purpose. we decided that less is more. even with the availability of john’s technology, we weren’t going to upgrade to an overprocessed, overproduced sound." 01/01

  • face magazine
"i produced most of what you are hearing, i had complete artistic freedom to be who i am. regardless of who likes it, who buys it, who actually gets it. i have accomplished a huge goal just finishing after the crash" 10/00

  • face magazine by sarah heifetz
"with the recent release of her second album, after the crash, laurie jones has proven herself as a song-writer, a musician, and a vocalist. not only does the album capture the power and personality of jones, but also some essence of what it means to be human." 10/00

  • the lubec light by john maccarthy
"as the musical antithesis of [her] first recording, after the crash may disappoint those with preconceived expectations, but most listeners will probably like it a lot, for one simple reason - it's very good." 10/00

  • lubec light
"laurie spoke of how she sought to express a sense of independence and individuality that was lacking on her first CD." 09/00
